In an official blog post from Daimler website, it was revealed that Mercedes will be building upcoming GLB at Aguascalientes, Mexico, and Peking, China. These two facilities will have the responsibility to put together new GLB. Assembly of Mercedes-Benz GLB will commence from in coming months and it will make its way to the showrooms by the end of this year. It took Mercedes-Benz more than half a year to come up with GLB Concept. They started off with few sketches and 1:1 clay model. From there they conceptualized for seven-seater as base. Different parts were sourced from three different cars and rest of other components were made from scratch.
It made its public appearance as “Show Car 37” which was an onerous task. Shortly after that it was shown to European journalist in Building 80 in Sindelfingen, Germany. Then they face logistic difficulty as they had to ship to China. Hence, the study was loaded in converted sea container and flown to China is Economy class, just before three weeks before auto show opened for customer viewership. In term of size, Mercedes-Benz GLB is slotted between GLA and GLC. Reports suggest that new GLB is influenced by new G-Class.
Mercedes-Benz GLB will be lot roomier than the GLA and is based on FWD-biased AWD MFA2 platform. The same platform is used on new A-Class, B-Class and CLA and thus, will share most of its engine lineup with them. We already know that AMG GLB 35 version is coming with 302hp but we are not sure if it is getting AMG 45 treatment just like A45 hatch (offers in excess of 400hp). Official unveiling date is yet to be finalized, but we might expect it to see at Frankfurt Auto Show in September.
