Mercedes is making merry in small car segment with A35 and A45 and now it was revealed that company is adding new variant to the range. Documents from the German transport authority revealed that the plug-in hybrid version is coming soon. Set to be named Mercedes-Benz A250e, this new model will be powered with turbocharged 1.3-liter petrol engine. It generates 158hp and 200 Nm of torque. German luxury automaker will complement the petrol engine with a transmission-mounted electric motor adding 101hp and 299 Nm of torque extra. This extra power will make it more powerful than current A250.

Electric motor power source will be a 15-kWh lithium-ion battery pack that is reported to offer up to 37 miles of all-electric driving range. Transmission in the Mercedes-Benz A250e will be similar to other compact Mercedes-Benz models such as GLB i.e. eight-speed transmission. 15 kWh battery pack is placed under the rear seat of the plug-in hybrid and sits beside fuel tank. To make extra space for the battery, Mercedes-Benz A250e fuel tank has been reduced to just 35 liters.

It will also help in lowering the weight of the vehicle when it is fully fueled. Nonetheless, with inclusion of battery and electric motor, will make Mercedes-Benz A250e heaviest A-Class model on sale. Pricing details of the Mercedes-Benz A250e is still unclear, but no one should be surprised if A250e comes at a premium over non-hybrid A250 model. However, it will be quickest non-AMG model in A-Class family and should be able to hit 87mph in all-electric mode.
