Kia Motor UK has revealed a pre-production homologation Stinger GT S into a “track day monster”. Dubbed as Kia Stinger GT420, the name comes from model’s power that has been increased from 365hp in standard guise to 422hp. Kia Stinger GT420 comes with 3.3-liter twin-turbo V6 engine and torque has been increased to 560 Nm from 510 Nm. Genesis of this special edition comes from Kia’s way of saving a pre-production homologation car that is otherwise have had to be crushed. This car was used for final testing and tuning in the UK. It is also used as a press car that made appearance in many UK car magazine and TV shows such as The Grand Tour and Top Gear.
Kia was impressed with the pedigree of Stinger GT420 and it in fact clocked up to an impressive 10,000 miles. Kia then decided to turn it into a track car. Kia took support from Hyundai Motor Europe Technical Centre in Rüsselsheim, Germany for Stinger GT420. Engine modifications in Kia Stinger GT420 is quite extensive. The list includes HKS M45il spark plugs for enhanced combustion, a K&N sports air filter, and a lightweight Milltek Sport quad-exit exhaust system with catalysts deleted. Even the automatic transmission has been upgraded with six-row cooler instead of a four-row item to prevent overheating on the track. Moreover, the gearbox software was recalibrated to provide quicker shifting characteristic in Sport and Sport+ modes.
To turn into a track car, engineers removed all unnecessary weight such as seats and belts, airbags, sound system, interior rim, and rear window regulators. Additionally, engine cover, undercovers, parking sensors, boot and bonnet dampers, and rear bumper beam and foam are also removed. Rear windows are glued and lightweight door cards are installed. Lastly, sunroof has been removed and replaced with steel panel. Overall, engineers managed to shelve 150kg of weight post installation of roll cage, Sparco race seats, belts, fire extinguisher, and underbody stiffening. Kia UK fitted it with Eibach Pro lowering springs and anti-roll bars, wider OZ Racing Leggera rims shod with Pirelli Trofeo R tires (235/35/R19 at the front and 265/30/R19 at the rear), and uprated Brembo front brakes and others. To round off, a Stillen front splitter and rear diffuser, a rear spoiler by Air Design and eye-catching wrap.
