Infiniti Q60 Project Black S seems to be inching towards production as the company announced Renault F1 team has completed its “track-focused development” of the model. The latest version was revealed last fall and engineers from Renault F1 team and Infiniti have continued testing and refining the model. Infiniti didn’t go into specifics, but they did say that they have developed unique technology further, exploring whether it could be deployed in high-performance road car. The worked done seems to be successful as Infiniti said the development was signed off by Nico Hülkenberg. He took the protype for a spin at the Salzburgring in Austria.
Even though hybrid powertrain development is complete, Infiniti said that they will continue to test and validate Q60 Project Black S. There is a good reason behind this as the company confirmed that they are exploring the possibility of putting the car into limited production. Final decision on Infiniti Q60 Project Black S will be taken later this year. Nonetheless, company’s Deputy Chairman, Mike Colleran sad that it is too early to predict the outcome as they need a solid business case. He further added that it may not sound promising, but latest round of testing has proved its unique performance and underlines our pursuit of electrified performance.
Regardless, if Infiniti Q60 Project Black S goes into production or not, it features two energy harvesting systems. It is based on Q60 Red Sport 400 and electricity generated is stored in a 4.4-kWh lithium-ion battery pack. Then it is used by e-turbos and an electric motor that is integrated into the rear axle. This setup helps Infiniti Q60 Project Black S to produce 563hp and is improvement of 163hp over standard model. With extra boost, it can accelerate from 0-62mph in under four seconds.
