Honda hasn’t got much off-road truck to offer unlike others such as Ford Captor and Chevrolet Colorado ZR2. However, they just revealed a Rugged Open Air Vehicle concept at the SEMA. They dubbed it as ultimate off-road Honda four-wheeled vehicle. Honda Rugged Open Air Vehicle Concept is based on the same platform as Ridgeline pickup. It also benefits from the features that are present on Pioneer 1000. Apart from Ridgeline’s suspension and underpinning, Open Air Vehicle off-road Concept also gains same side-by-side doors just like the Pioneer 1000.
In addition to it, Honda off-road concept has a custom-designed bed and tailgate panels which said to have been modelled after the Pioneer. The stylish rugged characteristics are carries inside. Entire cockpit has been designed for life exposed to the outdoors. It is one of the places where Pioneer 1000 steering wheel can be seen and carries to Ridgeline’s steering column. Since, it is an off-roader, durable paint-on surfaces is applied to protect exposed instrument panel from the elements. Honda has not disclosed any information regarding the powertrain.
We can speculate that it will be powered using same Ridgeline’s 3.5 liter V6 engine that is rated at 280hp and 262 lb-ft of torque. Honda Rugged Open Air Vehicle Concept uses the same seats as the Civic Type R. However, it has been reupholstered in waterproof Pioneer 1000 materials. Smartphone holder is present on the RAM mounds. Honda Rugged Open Air Vehicle Concept can carry four passengers provided that they are strapped in by racing-style harness. Rugged Concept is designed Honda’s R&D Americas in Ohio. Don’t expect to see it soon in production version.
