Bugatti is in doldrums when it comes to launch of an SUV and are not giving any concrete details about it. Company’s CEO Stephan Winkelmann gave us a fresh information when he sat sown to talk with AutomobileMag. Winkelmann confirmed that the design of the SUV is complete. However, the board of management has yet to give their approval even it received positive response from prospective customers. He said that few potential customers saw it and they liked it. Few influential people in Wolfsburg gave complement to it. Nonetheless, at this point of time, there is no budget and also no decision.
He was asked why Bugatti opted for the crossover instead of going for a hypercar or a super saloon. The reason he gave was that crossovers are in huge demand and currently no one is doing high-performance, high-end luxury CUV. Since, battery capabilities haven’t reached at satisfactory level for many automakers, its to early for an electric hypercar. Despite this, he confirmed that generously packaged CUV would almost be battery-powered. Bugatti has demonstrated with Galibier Concept in 2011 that a super luxury sedan is compatible with their portfolio.
Stephen Winkelmann said that the time have moved on and he is currently skeptical that a sedan would be able to generate enough volume in today’s commercial market. Since, they are looking at 600 to 800 units per year not 100 units per year, sedan won’t be feasible. Apart from SUV, Bugatti might also decide to build a meaner version of Chiron that can break 311 mph barrier. Winkelmann had earlier denied top speed or development of Chiron SS, but admitted that it is a possibility.
