Arrival of the BMW Z4 in United States is still few months. However, we are lucky to get a first glimpse of BMW Z4 M40i and its true abilities. Thanks to exclusive test of German Sport Auto who took the prototype for lap test at the iconic Nurburgring. Behind the wheels of BMW Z4 M40i prototype is German racing driver Christian Gebhardt. We got a glimpse of still camouflaged of Z4 M40i prototype and managed to lap the German race track in 7 minutes and 55.41 seconds.
Even though the number is impressive, it still falls behind the Porsche 718 Cayman S. 718 Cayman S managed to lap Nurburgring in 7 minutes 46.72 seconds in year and driven by same driver. Since, it is still a prototype; the figure gives us an indication rather than outright performance figure of the finished series-production roadster. Unfortunately, we have no record of the lap time of Porsche 718 Boxster S which is direct rival to the Z4, also by the same driver. The power in the BMW Z4 M40i comes from 3.0 liter straight-six engine that generates 335hp. The engine is mated with eight-speed automatic transmission.
Since, BMW Z4 M40i is a member of M Performance range, thus, it has got an M-tuned sports suspension that includes active dampers, bigger brakes and an electronically controlled rear differential. German based luxury automaker claims that range-topping version of Z4 is able to achieve 0-60mph in 4.4 seconds. Full technical details of the BMW Z4 M40i for rest of engine variants will be revealed on 19th September. European premiere of the Z4 is scheduled for 4th October at Paris Auto Show.
