Audi R8 to go all-electric in 2022 with 1,000hp

There is no denying the fact that Audi R8 is an engrossing and rare vehicle. It is not often when we get it to see on roads. It is reported that Audi R8 will discard naturally aspirated 5.2 liter V10 engine. In its place, an all-electric powertrain will be used which will lift the performance into uncharted territory. Autocars reports that new Audi R8 will be inspired from recently revealed PB18 e-tron Concept. It is said that this EV will utilize electric powertrain that offers 764hp and Audi even claims that it will be able to hit the top speed of 186mph.

The setup will enable the new Audi R8 to accelerate from 0 to 62mph in over seconds will offer unprecedented performance. It is even claimed that electric powertrain will be so powerful that it will offer in excess 1,000hp that will be transferred to all four wheels. If Audi does manage to achieve it, performance figure will be closer to the likes of Rimac C_Two and Tesla Roadster. It is now know why Audi took this drastic step to overhaul R8 in such a manner. Nonetheless, this step does signify the rise of performance focused electric powertrains.

It is not a coincidence that all of Audi R8 rivals are moving towards hybrids by the end of next decade. For instance, McLaren 720S, Lamborghini Huracan, and Ferrari 488 GTB is going to be hybrid. However, before the arrival of Audi R8, German based carmaker will launch other all-electric models. The first in their list is Audi E-Tron crossover based E-Tron Sportback. After that, Audi’s first electric model E-Tron GT will be unleashed to take on Porsche Taycan.
