Audi highly anticipated electric sports car E-Tron GT is due in 2020. The 2020 Audi E-Tron GT will have similar range to that of E-Tron SUV which has 248 miles based on WLTP test. However, E-Tron GT will be focused more towards performance. This news was confirmed by Audi powertrain head Siegfried Pint in an interview to Autocar. The electric sedan plans to match the acceleration figure with the Tesla Model S P100D. Model S P100D has the top speed of 155mph. Audi plans to beat both these figures in four-door electric sedan.
If Audi manages to achieve this target, then E-Tron GT will take around 2.5 seconds to accelerate 62mph from drop dead position. It will also make 2020 Audi E-Tron GT most accelerative model from German luxury automaker. To put this figure into perspective, Audi E-Tron SUV takes 5.5 seconds to accelerate from 0-60mph. Even Audi R8 would be upset with this staggering acceleration figure. Interestingly, Siegfried Pint didn’t disclose how this feat would be achieved in this sedan. However, we speculate introduction of larger and more powerful electric motors. Audi’s technical development head had earlier said that E-Tron GT would have some genes of Porsche which might be helpful to achieve the target.
2020 Audi E-Tron GT will be underpinned J1 platform which is also present in the Porsche Taycan. Usage of this platform will offer similar performance to that of range-topping Tesla Model S. Audi has revealed that GT sedan batteries will be mounted lower in the floor unlike other E-Tron models. It would also be Audi’s first vehicle to be offered with 350kW fast charging. This feature will help 2020 Audi E-Tron GT to attain 80 per cent charge in under 12 minutes. Audi will showcase E-Tron in concept form at next month’s Los Angeles Auto Show.
